It can remain dormant for one round plus one round per level of the caster, before it loses its potency. Once combat is begun, the spell lasts for the remainder of the battle, up to a maximum of half an hour. A random effect occurs on each round of combat. Roll 1d6 to determine the effect. The shield attacks using the caster's melee (effects 1-3) or ranged (effect 4) attack bonus.
