Rotan Merchants' Alliance: International Affairs

This is one of several documents on the Rotan Merchants' Alliance
Trading offices
Although the RMA is headquartered in Rotan, it would be but a shadow of itself without its offices and connections in other towns and cities. The most important of these outposts are known as Trading Offices. Each office is run by a Factor with the help of supporting staff.

The main objective of the Trading Offices is to provide support and assistance to RMA members trading in the area and, at the same time, to help local traders interested in sending goods to Rotan. The offices channel information from their region to Communications division and distribute bulletins and reports issued by Trade Planning to local traders and RMA members. The Trading Offices also offer support to Intelligence division’s Field Agents.

In some cases, the RMA’s offices in remote locations are also responsible for promoting the nation of Rotan as a diplomatic intermediary. The crown has relied on the RMA for foreign intelligence on many occasions.

Representatives
RMA representatives are individuals representing the RMA's interests in strategic locations. Representatives have similar but substantially fewer duties than Factors and also have less authority to negotiate on behalf of the RMA. Representatives are often involved in other businesses, and represent the RMA’s interests as a sideline.

The RMA usually positions representatives where the RMA is considering setting up a full Trading Office, in order to “test the waters”. However, there are sometimes also political reasons for limiting the RMA’s influence to a representative. This is the case in Miris, for instance, because of the unusually restrictive elven trade laws.
