Artak's Field Guide to Exotic Herbal Remedies

Herbs
Aldust: This herb is rare, but can be found in isolated spots in the Mets swamplands. It has the peculiar property of eating through wood. Aldust is a clear with a faint peppery smell. Only a few varieties of swamp-wood are immune to its effects. (Aldust does 2d6 hp of damage to wood each round and ignores wood's hardness. One dose costs 50 gp.)

Baxis: Baxis is an expensive, but very effective healing salve. It is sometime used by the Woodsmen and Rangers of the elven Forest Watch. (One dose of Baxis heals 1d4 hp and costs 25 gp.)

Carvish: Carvish is a herb found in the Great Desert. It is quite abundant where ground water is close to the surface. Nomads use Carvish as a balm for parched lips as it provides useful protection against the sun. Unfortunately it is difficult to remove and turns sour if left on for more than a day or two. Carvish is nicknamed "camel-hump" because of its lumpy leaves.

Druferia: This stick, hanging pod-like plant was found in the far-western forests in 2694:4. It helped Artak cure a fever caused by local insects. It has a slightly sweet odour.

Kayress: This water dwelling plant has small, diamond-shaped leaves and is easy to recognise. When fresh, Kayress can be burned to give off a thick, yellow smoke. This is useful for signalling, but not for cover because the smoke rises quickly. It does however take quite a while to disperse. If inhaled, the smoke can cause uncontrollable coughing and irritates the eyes. Kayress is believed to have a similar looking relative with none of the properties mentioned above. Kayress tends to dry out quickly and then becomes useless.

Kuntak: Although it has yellow leaves, and grows much taller than its cousin, this plant has similar effects to the verulis shrub. When beaten into a pulp and seeded with aniseed oil, the bark of the Kuntak tree, normally found near riverbanks in Simipia, exudes a brownish bitter liquid known by locals as Lillyos' Tears. The liquid, when imbibed, can produce feelings of euphoria mingled with a complete lack of rational fear.

Lactyr: This herb occurs in abundance in the Mets swamplands. It is used only in a few religious warding rituals. It is usually ground into a yellow powder before use.

Lathweed: This herb is thought to be long extinct. It is rumoured to increase the effectiveness of other herbal concoctions.

Marweed: Strictly speaking, this is the name of a root-like plant found in the Outreach forest area. However, it is generally used to mean the buds picked off this root. The buds are rumoured to be able to reduce fevers.

Nurim: This plant has small greeny-yellow leaves. The fumes of burning nurim leaves have a mildly intoxicating effect, similar to drunkness. Elves are particularly susceptible to nurim fumes – they become dizzy and hallucinate after inhaling very small quantities of the plant’s fumes.

Parpnip: This is a large turnip-like growth, found in the far northern reaches of the Outreach forest area. Apart from being a nutritious food source, it's juice is a strong alkaline.

Shiwood: The herb Shiwood is the name of a small flower taken from the Shiwood tree. It is extremely difficult to obtain as the tree very seldom flowers. Artak found a small sample when passing through the forests of Outreach. Shiwood has thick succulent petals, similar to those of a cactus or aloe, but without spikes or spines. Although unconfirmed, the juices of these petals are rumoured to have very good regenerative and healing properties.

Silveroak: These beautiful trees are resistant to fire. The sap of the Silveroak produces Silverstreak Amber, hightly sought after as a semi-precious stone and as a spell component. These trees are highly prized by druids and mistletoe gathered from Silveroaks is always pure, no matter what time of day it is harvested. It is rumoured that Silveroak trees all grew from acorns planted by Souriin Draco. It is said that he planted the acorns as a service to Egreera for destroying a forest with a magical fire. Silveroak trees grow much faster than most oak trees.

Terric: The deep purple flower of the Terric shrub is reputed to have powerful personality enhancement properties. It is found only in the Tropicanum area east of Feroll City. (Pinning a Terric flower to clothes gives the wearer a +2 enhancement bonus to her Charisma for one hour and costs 30gp.)

Verulis: This small shrub grows in the flat mudlands of Simipia. It produces a purple plant, the petals of which can be distilled into a deep violet liquid. When drunk this liquid greatly increases a person's reactions and focus for a few minutes. Occasionally verulis triggers a powerful dream-like state lasting several hours.

Poisons
Cardac: Crushed cardac root is often used as an ingested poison. It is highly toxic and debilitating, and frequently results in death.

Lick: Lick is a general term for a variety of extremely lethal poisons made from the ghurika family of plants. In all forms, Lick needs to be injected to be effective. If successful, it has been known to cause death within seconds. Fortunately, Lick is extremely unreliable and does not always take effect. Artak has a recipe for a slightly more potent version of Lick which he has dubbed "Hard Lick"

Olymis: Olymis is an extremely toxic poison, which is added in small but effective doses to the bloodstream of the enemy to give the required reaction (or lack of it). Curiously, successive doses of Olymis have no further effect on a victim for 1-4 weeks.

Pyn: A slower acting form of Lick, Pyn takes longer to take effect and does less damage to its victim, but is more likely to overcome a target's natural resistance.

Recipe for Olymis
Ingredients
  • Resin from an oak tree
  • One owl pellet
  • Bread mould (blue bread mould is ideal; red can also be used, but larger quantities are required)
  • Half a flask of fresh pus
  • Secret ingredient X
(A rare wall-growing mushroom can substituted for the powder formed from the pellet, bread mould and resin, but is expensive and difficult to obtain.)
Method
Melt the resin over an open flame, until it is a runny liquid and then crumble in the bread mould. Coat the owl pellet in the mixture and leave to harden. Suck the dried pellet until it has a bitter and slightly salty flavour. The saliva bonds with the resin, forming a salty mixture at the correct concentration.

Crush and grind the resulting pellet until it forms a light beige powder. This powder must be thoroughly mixed with the warmed-up pus. Finally, the secret ingredient is added. A hearty shake completes the Olymis poison.
