There are an estimated 27000 human or humanoid inhabitants in the lands currently under the control of Outreach. The bulk of these people (15000) live in Outreach City or in the farmlands and forests immediately surrounding the city. The remaining 12000 are split equally between the northern and southern halves of the region. The settlements that have been under the control of Outreach the longest – a group traditionally known as The Twelve Villages – are all located in the southern part of Outreach. The towns and villages in the north have only come under the protection of Outreach more recently, as Outreach patrols have forced gnollish raiding packs to retreat. Most of the population of Outreach is human, but there has been a recent influx of halflings into the region as well as a scattering of dwarves interested in the region’s mining activities. The Yablonc language is used almost exclusively in southern Outreach. Most important people in Outreach are also able to converse in Ivrean, but only about one-in-ten of the general population can do so. The villagers of northern Outreach tend to be gifted with languages, and usually speak Yablonc and Ivrean, as well as their native Tucusk tongue. In Outreach City, almost a third of the adult population is able to read and write basic Yablonc. This is mainly thanks to a spirited government campaign encouraging citizens – particularly those coming into contact with other nations – to learn to read and write. Literacy is much lower outside of the capital city. Some members of the southern human population are prone to berserk fits. Thought to be a gift passed through the bloodlines by the inhabitants of Je-Lorak, warriors with this "gift" are able to fight on beyond normal human endurance. It is rumoured that Euvgeni Maryamitrevnavich himself has this condition, but there are no reliable reports to back this up. Most of the citizens of Outreach work in the timber or mining industries, as these are central to the nation’s economy. There is also a strong legal profession in Outreach. With the opening of new markets and Euvgeni’s policies of broader involvement in continental affairs, it has become increasingly common for Ivrean nobles and merchants to engage the services of a barrister or loremaster from Outreach. The currency used in Outreach is the Rubble, with one coin equal to approximately one third of a Rotan gold coin (known as a King’s Head). A smaller coin – the Rubb, pronounced "rooob" – is also in circulation. One Rubb is equal in value to 1/20 of a Rubble. Although this coinage system is widely used in Outreach, it is not uncommon for the currency of Rotan (used in most of Ivrea) to be accepted by merchants and traders in the forest nation without argument. The people of Outreach are not a
very religious people, possibly because of their origins. Some residents
pay lip-service to nebulous "war gods", but this is more of a tradition
than an active faith. It is unclear which gods the Tucusk people revere,
if any.
Also located in the Upper Forest are the Outreach diamond mines. Three locations are still being actively mined; two earlier sites are now abandoned. Recently, a dwarven consortium has begun investigating possible mining sites in the Lower Forest. Also in this region, less than a day’s travel from Outreach is a field now known as Dragon’s Truce Field. It was here that Euvgeni met Prince Fen-Reshk of the Lizardmen, negotiated a truce and then fought the great dragon Dagaronzie. The massive lake known as The Seep punctuates the east of Outreach. The lake stretches some sixty miles from its north-western corner to its south-eastern shores. A journey by fishing boat across this expanse takes about ten days in good weather. Faster vessels are common along the eastern shore. The River Egri enters Outreach in the far north, feeds the Seep in the east and then turns west past the capital city, before flowing due west towards Sses – the nation of the lizardmen. The northern regions of Outreach are also wooded, but not as densely as in the south. The landscape of northern Outreach is also more rugged and includes the Forest of the Split Streams. A deep canyon with an underground river cuts through this forest but the terrain is treacherous and largely unexplored. Between the north and south regions of Outreach are scrub and grasslands. These areas touch on the Great Desert at the western border with Béray. To the north of Outreach are Pirs
and Rotan. They are the nation’s two main trading partners and the need
for a safe corridor northwards has forced Outreach to drive gnollish raiders
out of the area. To the east of Outreach lies an unexplored area known
as Murn Land and to the south are the Giantdowns – home to many clans of
hill giants. To the southwest, Outreach shares a border with Sses, the
nation of the lizardmen. Although there is a truce in place between Sses
and Outreach, both nations watch this border closely.
In the trees south of the Egri are the four towns and villages making up the Lower Forest: the villages of Aremead and Pinedale and the towns Birchtown and Mapleleaf. Mapleleaf is the second largest settlement in Outreach with about 1500 inhabitants. Warriors from Mapleleaf tend to be exceptionally fierce and are more likely to have berserker blood. On the immense body of water known as The Seep are three more of the Twelve Villages: Watertown and Salmonrun, both located within a few miles of the magnificent three level waterfall created by the Egri’s grand entrance into the Seep; and On-the-lake on the southern shores. All three settlements fish the Seep extensively. In the more desolate mid-regions
of Outreach lie the two smallest of the Twelve Villages: Treetops
and Twelfthtown. Both villages were devastated in the recent battles
with the lizardmen army. Fortunately, both have been partially resettled
in recent months by halfling families migrating east from Waterloaf.
